(KNSI) – Crews with the city of Minneapolis appear to have successfully reopened the intersection of 38th and Chicago – known as George Floyd Square – back up to traffic.
City workers with heavy machinery and members of the community peace organization known as Agape tried to open it last week, but as soon as it was opened, activists closed it off using whatever makeshift barricades they could find like pallets and dumpsters.
Footage from the scene just before 5:00 this morning shows multiple front end loaders and dump trucks moving through and workers removing items from the square with the help of community members. Some people could be seen sitting around the large fist sculpture that appeared in the middle of the intersection last summer. The city says that the fist sculpture will be allowed to remain, along with other items.
The reopening is part of a “phased reconnection” of the area to the rest of the city.
Members of Agape said it was their initiative to reopen the area and create a new normal to pay tribute the George Floyd but allowing traffic to pass through.
