(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation says extreme heat the last few days and more in the forecast increases the possibility of buckling pavement.

The sun heats the pavement, and it gets much hotter than the air temperature. That causes the pavement to expand with no place to go but up, and the road surface eventually buckles under the pressure of expansion.

Pavement buckles can be dangerous if they’re driven over.

If you come across one, try not to drive over it. Instead, slow down and move to another lane, then call 911.
