(KNSI) – Drivers on Interstate 94 will notice lane shifts as a major road construction project continues Monday.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says westbound traffic on I-94 between Highway 25 in Monticello, and Wright County Road 8 in Hasty will be shifted to the eastbound lanes.
The lane shifts will take several days to complete and will be in place through October as crews reconstruct and expand westbound I-94 to three lanes.
MnDOT’s advice to drivers is to allow for some extra time to make it through the work zone.
Expect reduced speeds, lane shifts, narrow shoulders, and lane widths reduced to 11 feet.
I-94 will remain open to two lanes in both directions through the work zone.
Motorists will continue to encounter overnight single lane closures on both directions of I-94 between Wright County Road 8 in Hasty and Highway 24 in Clearwater through October.
MnDOT urges travelers to slow down, be alert and watch the road when navigating through the entire I-94 Maple Grove to Clearwater work zone.
MnDOT says I-94 between Maple Grove and Clearwater is undergoing upgrades along a 39-mile stretch of road.
Crews are adding travel lanes, rebuilding bridges, constructing access lanes, improving drainage, adding an interchange, and resurfacing deteriorating pavement.
MnDOT says when complete, the stretch of interstate will have a safer, smoother road surface, better commercial access for freight and business, and less vehicle congestion.
The $350 million project is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
