(KNSI) – In a surprise move Thursday morning, city workers descended on the Minneapolis intersection known as George Floyd Square and began removing concrete barriers which had closed the area to traffic since May of 2020.

Around 4:00 Thursday morning, roughly 100 employees from Minneapolis Public Works arrived at 38th and Chicago, now known as George Floyd Square, and began carefully dismantling the memorial, which had blocked the area off to traffic since May of 2020.

A garden and a fist sculpture were created in the middle of the intersection last spring, and reports say the fist sculpture will remain, but the garden around it will not. Crews were seen putting up turn lane signs and new traffic control measures to guide drivers around “bump outs” surrounding the sculpture in a roundabout.

The community-led effort will preserve other memorials and key areas of the site for people who still want to visit.
