(KNSI) – Major demolition began on the former St. Cloud Tech High School’s west wing on Wednesday.
Edward lives in the neighborhood and watched as the teardown began.
“I’m still trying to process it. It seems strange. They built this whole thing and now they’re just tearing it down.”
He says he walks by the building every day.
Edward says he’s glad the historic part of the school will be used as St. Cloud transitions the school into a new city hall.
“I think that’s probably a good use of the building. They were going to make wide condominiums out of it, and that whole deal fell through. So I guess it’s a good use, and it’s bigger than the city hall.”
It will take about six weeks to tear down and haul away the nearly 10,000 tons of debris.
After the west wing of Tech is gone, a parking lot will be built in its place.
The other parts of the building will house St. Cloud’s city offices and the council chambers.
City offices will begin to move into the renovated building in December.
