(KNSI) – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating after a man wanted in connection to a shooting in downtown Minneapolis died by suicide following a chase that ended in Sherburne County.
Saturday afternoon, officers from the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office and the Big Lake Police Department saw a suspect vehicle heading east on Highway 10 in Big Lake. That vehicle was allegedly involved in a shooting earlier that day. According to the BCA, witnesses at the scene of a shooting near South 9th Street and LaSalle Avenue, in which two men were allegedly seen exchanging gunfire, identified the vehicle’s driver. The other man involved in that incident was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. The Minneapolis Police Department is investigating that incident.
After spotting the suspect’s vehicle on Highway 10, police attempted a pursuit intervention technique or PIT maneuver, and the Minnesota State Patrol tried using stop sticks to get the vehicle pulled over. Elk River police also joined in the chase, and at that point, police say, the driver fired shots at officers.
The BCA says the suspect vehicle left the road, crossed into oncoming traffic, and crashing through a barrier before coming to rest on a side street near Proctor Avenue Northwest and Highway 10 in Elk River.
When police approached the car, they say the man inside had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No one else was inside the car, and no one was hurt in the chase or ensuing crash. Police say a handgun was found inside the car next to the man’s body.
At no time did any officer fire their weapons.
The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy. The man’s name has not been released.
