(KNSI) – A St. Paul man, who is a suspect in a hit and run, is under arrest after allegedly hitting an officer and fleeing from police in Waite Park Monday.
According to a press release from Waite Park, about 5:30 p.m., an officer saw a vehicle near the intersection of Waite Avenue and Division Street that had allegedly been involved in a hit and run in St. Joseph. A Waite Park police officer and a Stearns County sheriff’s deputy spoke with the 24-year-old driver, who had a Department of Corrections warrant out for his arrest.
As police tried to take him into custody, they say he pulled away from an officer, swung his arm around, and hit the officer in the face, causing him to lose his grip. Police say the suspect fled on foot into the Crossroads Center parking lot, where he was allegedly able to get back into his car and drove away. A woman in the car was able to get out. A Waite Park police officer attempted to use his Taser on the suspect, but the probes did not make contact.
Officers say he drove over several curbs and apparently blew a tire. St. Cloud police and deputies from Stearns County were able to finally get the man into custody.
The man is facing several charges, including hit and run, assaulting a police officer, and fourth-degree assault.
KNSI does not typically name suspects until they have been formally charged.
