(KNSI) – Parents with a child leaving the nest soon probably have many questions about preparing them for the next step in life.

Central Minnesota author and award-winning keynote speaker Kelly Radi says she had a lot of questions when sending her oldest child away to school and when she couldn’t find a book to help her, she wrote her own ‘Out to Sea: A Parents’ Survival Guide to the Freshman Voyage.’

Radi says after the last year and a half of dealing with the pandemic, it’s essential to help our children transition to life away from home.

“We’re going to talk about anxiety and mental and physical well-being. We’re going to talk about mentorship parenting, and then a lot of practical aspects and preparations things parents can do right now, things students need to know right now.”

She says the number one question from parents is the same.

“How much do I communicate with my student? How much is too much? What’s the magic number? Well, of course, the answer is there is no magic number.”

Radi says it all depends on your parenting style, but she says that everyone hopes for the same outcome wherever your child is going.

“Our ultimate goal is the same as the ultimate goal of their university or institution. Our ultimate goal is the same ultimate goal of our students. They just might not know it yet. And that is to prepare them to, to create and empower them to be adults functioning adults in the real world.”

Radi parents are critical to their child’s success.

“But now more than ever, parents have such a vital role in assisting and helping prepare their students, their children, their kids for this big life transition. And not to take it lightly, but also to give grace both to yourself and to your student as you navigate this together.”

She says the practical and the emotional aspects are the same whether your child is going into the military, the workforce, private college, public college, or trade school.

An online class for parents will be held over Zoom in July.

Registration is open at raditowrite.com.

The cost is $49.99 per household – includes a signed copy of Out to Sea: A Parents’ Survival Guide to the Freshman Voyage and access to all three online classes.

Sessions will be recorded and available for 48 hours afterward by request, in the event an attendee is unable to attend a session in person.
