(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Police Department will be teaching selected kids from the St. Cloud Area School District golf over the summer.

It’s the first year of the free pilot program Cops FORE! Kids.

SCPD Commander of the Community Engagement Division Martin Sayer says it’s about building a relationship with kids.

“Go out and take some of these kids that probably don’t get a lot of chances to go out and golf or to learn about golf. And to have our officers get to know some of the kids in our school a little bit more. And teach them some golf skills.”

The program starts June 7th and goes until August 16th, every Monday, for kids aged 8-18.

Two officers will play with three players in the morning and afternoon.

Sayer talked about how kids are picked to participate.

“We work with the District 742 to identify kids that could use the outreach from police and probably not have the means to get on a golf course.”

Clubs will be given to those who need them. Officer will provide transportation if needed.

Cops FORE! Kids will be at Territory Golf Club from 9 a.m. to noon and Angushire Golf Course from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Bring a lunch to eat if you decide to play both courses.

Contact a School Resource Officer with questions.

The SCPS intended to launch Cops FORE! Kids last year but delayed the program to 2021 because of the COVID 19 Pandemic.
