(KNSI) – A man was arrested near a school in St. Cloud after allegedly threatening police officers with a hatchet and fleeing on foot.

St. Cloud Police responded to an argument between a man and a woman in the 400-block of 2nd Street Southeast around 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

Officers arrived and learned some property had been damaged by the suspect, who fled the area on foot.

Police say they were following the suspect in the neighborhood when he pulled out a hatchet and threatened an officer with it.

The 25-year-old suspect continued to run through the neighborhood and allegedly threatened several officers with the hatchet.

Officers eventually arrested the St. Cloud man in an alley in the 500-block of 5th Avenue Southeast.

No one was injured during the incident.

The suspect is being held on suspicion of second-degree assault, threats of violence, fleeing police on foot, and felony property damage.

He was taken to the Benton County Jail pending formal charges.

KNSI News has a policy of not releasing the names of suspects until they’re formally charged.

St. Katherine Drexel School, Lincoln Elementry, and the East Target Store on Lincoln Ave were notified and went into lockdown for 15 to 20 minutes until the suspect was detained.

Some roadways in the area were also briefly blocked by officers for community safety.
