(KNSI) – Just in time for a summer-like Saturday, swimming is open at Quarry Park and Nature Preserve.
The largest of the parks in the Stearns County system, swimming is available at quarries two and 11. Quarry 11 is roughly 40 feet deep at its lowest point, has a sandy beach, picnic shelter, and restroom facilities. The walk back to Quarry 11 is about a third of a mile from the trailhead.
Quarry two, or Melrose Deep 7, is the deepest in the park at 116 feet deep at its lowest point and features high rock formations many use for cliff jumping. There are also picnic shelters and restrooms. The walk back to quarry two is about half a mile from the trailhead.
No lifeguards are present at either swimming quarry, and park officials say children must be supervised. Swimming is at your own risk. Glass containers, pets, smoking, vaping, and drinking alcohol are all not allowed.
Daily parking permits are $5 each, or $20 for an annual pass. Parking permits can be purchased in the online recreation catalog and at the gatehouse pay station.
Fishing is also available at quarries one, four, seven, nine, 13, 14, and 18. Proper fishing licenses are required. If fishing for trout, a trout stamp is also needed.
Scuba diving can be done at quarries one, 13, and 18. Divers must have a permit and be certified or be with a certified instructor.
Stearns County officials say rock climbing is open in designated areas, but climbers need a permit, which is free and valid for the calendar year.
