(KNSI) – The Governor’s Fishing Opener is back in 2021 after being canceled last year due to the pandemic.
The unofficial Minnesota Holiday is Saturday, and this year’s community for the fishing opener is Otter Tail County.
KNSI’s Bob Hughes talked with his fishing host for the opener, Tim Meehl, from Perham, and found out where the anglers will be on Saturday morning.
“The governor is going to be on Otter Tail Lake. That’s probably the real walleye generator. But you and I will be going on Rush Lake and that’s pretty good for walleye. We got some really good walleye lakes so right here closer around Perham.”
Meehl is also the mayor of Perham and talked about the strategy to get some fish.
“There I believe the fish will be pretty shallow this time of year. The water is a little bit chilly right now. I’ve talked to a bait guy the other day and he’s not been able to get any shiners yet because he said the water warms up during the day but at night it gets so cold. We’ll just we’ll just fall back and use some fat heads and we’ll hopefully find something. The opener can be good and the opener can be slow.”
The Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener has been a tradition since 1948.
It was designed to improve Minnesota’s economy by developing and promoting the state’s recreational opportunities, especially fishing.
It celebrates the kickoff of the summer tourism season.
KNSI will be broadcasting from the fishing opener on Friday and Saturday morning.
