(KNSI) – Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a 19-year-old man accused of shooting a police officer in the hand last year. Sumaree Deashan Boose of Waite Park pleaded not guilty to one felony count of first-degree assault on a peace officer in January.

The incident happened in the early morning hours of June 15th, 2020 after the criminal complaint says officers saw a Facebook Live video depicting Boose pointing at a possible handgun in his pocket; SCPD says Boose did not have a permit to carry. Two officers spotted Boose in a group of people outside a gas station shortly after midnight. Boose and the others ran as the officers got out of their cars, and as one officer chased after Boose, the two got into a struggle. The officer fired his Taser at Boose twice and was shot in the hand.

Afterward, false rumors that two Black men had been shot by police sparked demonstrations in St. Cloud.
