(KNSI) – Douglas County authorities are investigating after a drowning over the weekend.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was called just before 5:00 Saturday afternoon after the man was pulled from Lake Ida, northwest of Alexandria. Neighbors got the man out of the water and started CPR. First responders took over, but the man was pronounced dead.

Officials say he was found about 30 to 40 feet from shore in four to eight feet of water. He was not wearing a life jacket.

His name is being withheld pending family notification.

Temperatures soared into the 80s and 90s across Minnesota Saturday, but officials say the water was not nearly as warm, and cold water can cause a shock to the system, including muscle spasms which can hamper one’s ability to swim.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says 49 people died from non-boating drownings around the state last year. That was the highest number of non-boating drownings since 2011 when there were 50.
