(KNSI) – The American Legion in Waite Park is closing its building.

Friday was the last time people could enjoy a drink or a meal inside the Silver Star Legion Post 428, located at 17 2nd Avenue North in Waite Park.

According to the Legion’s General Manager Amy Jo Johnson, the Post had been trying to sell the building for a year and a half but was unsuccessful.

Before the pandemic, the Legion thought they had a buyer for the building, but the deal didn’t go through.

If the building would have been sold, the Legion was hoping to move the Post.

Johnson says high taxes on the property were a big reason why members wanted to move the Legion.

Post 428 will still meet in the Waite Park area, but a new place hasn’t been selected.

Johnson says the Post will look at all of its options over the next year and could find another building in the future.
