(KNSI) – A Delano man has been charged after allegedly striking and killing a pedestrian and his dog while racing in a Twin Cities suburb.
According to the Criminal Complaint, 19-year-old Jack Henry Blaschke is charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide.
Police say on Wednesday night, the 19-year-old sped down a Plymouth street, striking a pedestrian and his black lab and leaving the scene.
Police found the 65-year-old victim lying in a driveway with the victim’s dog lying about 100 feet away.
Witnesses said Blaschke was stopped at a red light just before 9 p.m. when he allegedly honked three times at a neighboring driver, apparently indicating an intention to race the other driver.
Investigators say Blaschke was going 70 mph when he hit the pedestrian and his dog.
The man was transported to the hospital but later died.
Blaschke was arrested several hours later. Blaschke told investigators that he was driving around 40 mph when he came around a curve, and the man and his dog were “right there in front of him.”
He says he panicked and drove to a friend’s house instead of staying at the scene of the crash.
