(KNSI) – The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recognized several cities around the state for their wastewater treatment plants for outstanding compliance.
The St. Cloud wastewater treatment plant made the list for being one of the best.
According to the city of St. Cloud website, the St. Cloud Wastewater Treatment Facility was put in service in 1976. The City of St. Cloud owns and operates the facility. Treatment is shared contractually among the area cities, including St. Cloud, St. Augusta, St. Joseph, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, and Waite Park. The facility is designed to treat an average flow of 13 million gallons per day generated from a population of over 120,000 people.
The City of St. Cloud’s first wastewater treatment facility was constructed in 1956 and was located near 4th Avenue South. Before 1956, wastewater in the City of St. Cloud was not treated.
To be eligible, facilities must submit all monitoring reports to the MPCA correctly and on time, demonstrate consistent compliance through monitoring or surveys and employ staff certified by the MPCA in wastewater operations.
In Benton County, the Eagle View Commons plant in Elk River and the plant in Gilman were recognized. There were 15 treatment plants in Stearns County on the list and 12 in Sherburne County.
