(KNSI) – Farm fields are starting to get planted across Central Minnesota, meaning drivers will encounter farm machinery on the roads.
Local Extension Educator for the University of Minnesota Nathan Drewitz covers crop production in Stearns, Benton, and Morrison Counties.
He says the ground conditions are ready for planting.
“We’re probably in the low 40s, at this point, soil temperatures. And that’s a good spot to be in. I fully expect we’ll start seeing guys start planting Friday and though and the weekend, corn will start going in, I would assume here pretty quick, and it really depends on where you’re at. I know you get closer to Paynesville, in that region, we’re already seeing corn in the ground.”
While planting is just getting underway, it’s only going to get busier.
“I fully expect in that next week, depending on when we get the rain and where it comes, that we will start seeing planters moving and corn start really getting into ground early next week.”
And as more farmers are out doing their work, drivers need to give farmers space on roadways.
“Give your farmers a bit of a break. Make sure that you keep your distance behind planters and that when you pass planters and spray rigs that you’re taking care not to put yourself and others in risk. Make sure that you have plenty of clearance and, that you’re passing in passing zones around these tractors.”
He says there’s a rule of thumb to remember when you come across a farmer going from field to field.
“In general, if you can’t see them, they can’t necessarily see you. And being in a hurry around a tractor could lead to some very, very poor outcomes at the end of the day. So just be aware of that and make sure that you’re playing it safe when you’re around these these big pieces of equipment.”
In Stearns County, the top farming crops are corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and potatoes.
The county is also known for its dairy industry which is among the most productive in Minnesota.
