(KNSI) — A Minneapolis man police believe is connected to an alleged drive-by shooting that wounded two members of the Minnesota National Guard is facing federal charges.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office charged 28-year-old Andrew Thomas with being a felon in possession of a firearm but do not accuse him or charge him with any shooting. Thomas and a boy were taken into custody Sunday night in an SUV matching the description of the SUV involved in the shooting.
Two Minnesota National Guardsmen were hurt when police say someone in a light-colored SUV allegedly shot at a HUM-VEE near Penn Avenue and West Broadway Avenue about 4:20 a.m. Four soldiers were inside the HUM-VEE when a bullet went through the windshield.
One soldier was taken to the hospital for injuries consistent with shattered glass. Another soldier’s injuries were described as superficial.
A Ford Explorer, which matched the description of the vehicle involved in the shooting, was stopped near 6th Street South and Cedar Avenue South. Police say they found a .22 caliber revolver, a semi-automatic handgun, ammunition, and two spent casings.
Thomas is due back in court Tuesday.
