(KNSI) – Two people are dead, and another person is fighting for their life following a fiery crash in the Lowry Tunnel in Minneapolis Sunday night.
The Minnesota State Patrol says about 9:40, a BMW was traveling west on Interstate 94, entered the tunnel at a high rate of speed, and hit the freeway barrier wall. The impact punctured the fuel tank. The vehicle exploded as it skidded through the tunnel, where it came to rest. Video from the scene shows drivers backing up and turning around to drive east in the westbound lanes to get out of the way and make room for first responders. Thick smoke could be seen rolling out of the east side of the tunnel, which was closed for several hours as crews cleaned up and reconstructed the crash.
According to the state patrol crash reports, two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Another, identified as 24-year-old Demetrius Ramon Hart, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The two others in the car have yet to be identified.
