(KNSI) – A Paynesville man has admitted murdering his daughter when he intentionally set fire to their home in the summer of 2019.

As the trial was about to begin on Monday, John Sean Newport pleaded guilty to one count of Unintentional Murder in the Second Degree while committing felony Arson.

According to the Stearns County Attorney’s Office, the joint plea agreement calls for the 48-year-old man to be sentenced to 18 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for July 2nd.

Due to the particular cruelty of the crime, the sentence was 36 months more than the sentencing guidelines recommended.

On the evening of July 23rd, 2019, a 911 call came in from 22-year-old Jamey Newport, who said her father had come in the trailer and was pouring gasoline. He then set the inside of the trailer on fire.

By the time police arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed.

First responders were able to get her out of the home, but she died at Paynesville Hospital.

Newport was arrested at the scene.
