(KNSI) — A Hutchinson police officer is out of the hospital after allegedly being attacked by a man with a hammer Wednesday.
Hutchinson police responded to an alleged assault at the Menards store about 2:15 p.m. They say a man assaulted an employee with some lumber and left the store. He was found in a nearby Walmart parking lot.
Police say they tried to stop the driver, who led them on a slow-speed chase before stopping in the area of Highway 15. When an officer approached the driver, investigators say he became trapped in the window, and the suspect sped off, dragging the officer. A struggle ensued, and according to a press release from the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office, the driver attacked the officer, hitting him in the head with a hammer.
The officer was taken to the hospital for treatment. The 61-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene and booked into the McLeod County jail.
