(KNSI) — Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin will not testify in his own defense.

At a hearing Thursday morning, Chauvin told Hennepin County judge Peter Cahill, “I will invoke my Fifth Amendment privilege,” which under the Minnesota and U.S. Constitution, defendants are allowed not to make any statements that could be self-incriminating.

Attorney Eric Nelson explained to Chauvin that taking the stand would open him up to cross-examination by the state of Minnesota, and Nelson would not be allowed to limit the scope of the questioning.

Cahill also said closing arguments in the case could come as soon as Monday.

Chauvin is charged with second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in connection to George Floyd’s death in police custody last year.
