(KNSI) – A group of high school students in St. Cloud shattered their goal by raising more than $8,000 for a local food shelf.

Cathedral High School kids in the Global Issues class raised the money from Cathedral alum and students.

Every year the class takes a trip to a developing country. Unfortunately, due to COVID, the trip didn’t happen.

One of the global issues discussed in class was global hunger. So, instead of a trip, the class decided to help in the St. Cloud area.

They had a goal of $600 for their “Bunny Money Drive,” named that since they were raising funds around Easter.

Last week, the students presented the St. Cloud Catholic Charities Emergency Services Food Shelf with a check for $8,334.28.

In March, students from Cathedral High School’s Global Issues class came up with the idea to raise funds for the food shelf.

As part of their strategy to raise funds money, one student wrote a
letter to Cathedral alumni, past and present parents, and friends of Cathedral asking for support.

Several alumni and local business owners even agreed to match the student’s goal, and the response was overwhelming.

Some alumni and local business owners even offered to match their goals.

With the money donated, the food shelf can buy $25,000 worth of food.

Food insecurity is a problem for 1 in 8 children in Minnesota.

To whom it may concern,

My name is Evan Wahlin, and I’m a junior at Cathedral High School. In late January, I started taking the Global Issues class.

Every year the class takes a trip to a developing country somewhere in the world. I was very excited to participate in something so unique and learn from the experience. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we were unable to travel on this trip.

Instead, our class came up with ways we can help in our community and make a difference. One of the global issues discussed in class was global hunger.

After researching this topic and seeing how hunger affects over 690 million people, we decided to do a money drive to raise awareness and support our local food shelf.

As a class, our goal is to raise $600 in total by April 1st. We plan to spread the word by making posters, social media messages, announcements, and prizes for students.

Mother Teresa once said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to make many ripples.”

We know our $600 will not change the world, but it will impact many lives. We would greatly appreciate any extra help in raising money and spreading awareness! With your help, we will be able to do so much more.

Thank you,
Evan Wahlin
