(KNSI) — A 27-year-old Chicago man wanted for allegedly murdering an 11-year-old girl was arrested in the St. Cloud area last month.

Marcus Starkey was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery in Cook County District Court in Illinois for the March 1st shooting of Ny’Andrea Dyer. Investigators say the child was in the back seat of her mother’s SUV at a gas station when just before 11:00 p.m., two men allegedly began shooting at each other, and a bullet hit the child in the face.

The bullet ended up lodged in her neck, next to her spinal cord. Reports say Ny’Andrea was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support, where she remained for three weeks before being taken off the ventilator on March 22nd.

The attempted murder charge is due to an 18-year-old man who police say was also shot at the gas station.

U.S. Marshals tracked Starkey to the St. Cloud area, and he was arrested on March 18th. He was extradited to Illinois on April 1st where he was arrested for the murder.

Starkey is due back in Cook County court later this month.
