(KNSI) – Women lead all of the subordinate command positions in the Minnesota National Guard’s 175th Regiment at Camp Ripley for the first time.

Late last month, Lieutenant Colonel Amber Manke became commander for the 175th’s 1st Battalion. The 2nd Battalion is led by Lt. Col. Brandi DeGier, and Major Jolene Carlson commands the Regional Traning Site – Maintenance.

Col. Jason Benson, who commands the 175th Regiment, said in a statement that having women in senior command positions sets an example for junior soldiers and officers. Manke said significant progress has been made on incorporating women into historically male-dominated roles.

Women in the U.S. military were banned from combat roles until 2013.

The 175th Regiment at Camp Ripley trains and educates other National Guard soldiers.
