(KNSI) – Minnesota has the sixth-highest tax burden in the U.S.
A report by WalletHub shows each state’s tax burden, defined as “the proportion of total personal income that residents pay toward state and local taxes.” Minnesota ranks the sixth-highest overall for its tax burden.
The state comes up fifth for its individual income taxes, 20th for total sales and excise taxes and 23rd for property taxes.
The state with the highest tax burden is New York, and the lowest is Alaska. Neighbors Iowa and Wisconsin rank 13th and 17th for their tax burdens, respectively, while North Dakota is 38th and South Dakota is 43rd.
Tax season is longer than usual this year, as the IRS extended the federal filing deadline from April 15 to May 17 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A similar measure was taken last year, giving taxpayers until July 15 to file their paperwork.
