(KNSI) – Stearns County is looking at improving the jail facility and one of its courthouse buildings.
The Stearns County Board of Commissioners held Special Session on Tuesday to go over a needs assessment for the Justice Center and the Courthouse at 815 Courthouse Square.
The two buildings are nearly 30 years old and need technology upgrades, and the configurations have become obsolete.
The estimated cost to renovate the Justice Center, which includes the jail and sheriff’s office, is $39.5 Million compared to $46.5 million to build a new facility.
County officials say they’re also running out of space in both buildings, and Stearns County’s population is expected to continue to grow over the next twenty years.
All options are on the table, including moving the building out of downtown.
Commissioners will keep working with their consulting groups to go over different plans and options.
No action was taken at the meeting.
