(KNSI) – Stearns County is now under a winter weather advisory as the National Weather Service says everything from heavy snow to tornadoes is expected across the state.
Douglas, Pope, Stevens, and Todd Counties are under a winter storm warning. Forecasters say between five and seven inches of snow is expected from Morris north through Alexandria and Staples starting Wednesday afternoon and going through midnight.
In the winter weather advisory area, which affects Stearns County, up to three inches of snow is expected. The winter weather advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Wednesday until midnight.
Off to the southeastern portion of the state, they are bracing for potential severe thunderstorms. Several counties are under a wind advisory from 5 p.m. Wednesday until midnight for sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles an hour, with wind gusts over 45 expected. There is also a slight risk of severe weather down that way this afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center says frequent lightning, heavy rain, high winds, and even a tornado or two are possible.
The central Minnesota area is under a general threat for thunderstorms today, even with the winter weather advisory in effect.
