(KNSI) – Afternoon highs around central Minnesota will challenge weather records today.
The record high of 61, set back in 1911, is in danger of being shattered today with a predicted high of 65. The reason behind the unseasonable warmup is a bulge in the jet stream coming farther north than usual and our lack of snow cover. Our recent stretch of days above freezing has melted the snowpack, allowing surface temps to rise above normal. The average high for the St. Cloud area for March 9th is 44.
Records in other areas of the state are in danger of falling Tuesday, including in the Twin Cities, where the record high of 61 for March 9th, set in 1879, could be smashed with a forecast high temp of 68.
However, our warm March weather will be short-lived as a storm system moves in overnight, bringing sloppy wet conditions and highs in the low 40s.
