(KNSI) – Minnesotans will soon get their first doses of the latest vaccine designed to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Governor Tim Walz met one of the first shipments of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on Wednesday.

Minnesota will get about 45,200 doses of the vaccine this week.

Immunizations will begin shortly after doses arrive at vaccination sites.

Providers have given more than 1.4 million doses of vaccine to almost 930,000 people.

Around 54% of Minnesotans age 65 or older and 56% of K-12 educators and child care workers have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine.

The Governor says Minnesota is a national leader in getting shots into arms.

As of Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control ranks Minnesota 3rd among states for the percentage of doses received that have been administered.
