(KNSI) – A St. Joseph man accused of killing two children was sentenced today in two different counties.

Police say James Joseph Robert Wood pleaded guilty in December to murdering two children – a 7-month-old in Rice and a 22-month-old in St. Cloud.

Wood was accused of beating Noah Belgarde to death in October of 2018 after the child’s mother had put the baby to sleep.

Wood was also accused of killing another child in September of 2015. Wood told police he was watching Billy Chapman while the child’s mother worked when he said the baby fell off the couch and hit his head. A medical examiner said Chapman died from complications due to multiple blunt force injuries. His death was ruled a homicide.

Wood was sentenced in Benton County court Friday morning to 25 years in prison for the beating death of Belgarde.

Friday afternoon, he was sentenced in Sherburne County court to 25 years in prison for Chapman’s death.
