SAINT CLOUD (KNSI) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has hired a local water treatment manager to serve as a technical advisor for its Smart Salting Assessment Tool program.
The MPCA hired Jim Gruenke of Traut Companies to help home and business owners make better salt use decisions.
The MPCA says salt use helps keep roads safer and is used in many commercial and agricultural practices. It can also help improve water quality for homes, but, they say, too much salt is becoming a concern by creating higher chloride concentrations in Minnesota’s lakes, streams, and rivers.
The Smart Salting Assessment Tool helps home and business owners track progress and show them the best water softening practices to reduce their environmental impact.
