(NBC/KNSI) - A Stearns County Sailor killed 76 years ago was laid to rest this year.
Governor Dayton commemorated the 76th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack in a proclamation saying that Minnesota and U.S. flags should fly at half-staff on Thursday.
The proclamation also honors the 84 Naval Reservists from Minnesota who were serving at Pearl Harbor on the day of the attack.
Navy Fireman First Class Elmer Kerestes of Holdingford, was killed in the attack when the USS Oklahoma was sunk by torpedoes.
In July, he was laid to rest in his hometown.
In 2015, Navy personnel exhumed all the unknown remains from USS Oklahoma for analysis and identified Kerestes's remains.
VFW Post 5160 in Holdingford was named in honor of Kerestes and there is a war memorial in Holdingford dedicated to him.
