NEW YORK (KNSI) - After upgrading the defense with their first two picks of the 2013 NFL Draft the Minnesota Vikings made a deal late in the evening to bolster the offense by trading for yet another first round selection.
After selecting defensive tackle Sherrif Floyd at 23 and defensive back Xavier Rhodes at 25, the Vikings moved to get wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson with the 29th pick. Minnesota traded a second, third, fourth and seventh round selection in the draft to the New England Patriots for the Patterson pick.
Patterson, a 6'2, 216 pound wide out from the University of Tennessee has been compared to Randy Moss by some scouts. He has extreme raw physical talent that will need to be developed further at the NFL level. Patterson only played one year of major college football after spending two years at the junior college level. With the exit of Percy Harvin to Seattle, Patterson may be inserted into the kick and punt return game.
Floyd, a defensive tackle from the University of Florida. Only days ago, many experts had Floyd pegged as a top five selection, possibly as high as third overall to the Oakland Raiders. The fall of Floyd was good luck for the Norseman, as they made a value pick in adding the 6'3 297lbs monster in the middle.
Floyd can be expected to come in and play next to Kevin Williams, who is in the last year of his contract, and solidify the Vikings defensive front.
The Vikings then got some secondary help with the pick of Cornerback Xavier Rhodes has great size for a corner, 6'2, 210lbs. That isn't a coincidence, with the Vikings playing Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall twice a year, they needed a big corner to go man up on the outside.
The Vikings got great value out of their picks this evening, something that General Manager Rick Spielman has done in the past. Now the question is, how will the loss of the late round picks affect what kind of class the Vikings can bring into the 2013 season.
Round 2 and 3 are this evening, followed by round 4-7 on Saturday. Tune into "The Benchwarmers" on KNSI, Saturday morning 11-1pm as they break down the Vikings whole draft.
