Burnsville, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University football team boasts the NSIC North Division Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in senior quarterback Phillip Klaphake and senior defensive back Jack Moro.
Today the Northern Sun Conference released their preseason honors along with their coaches polls today for the North and South Divisions.
The Huskies are picked to finish fourth overall and second in the North Division. St. Cloud State also received a first place vote in the overall poll and two first place votes in the North Division. Minnesota State University, Mankato, the defending NSIC Champion, is the overall and South Division preseason favorite in 2013. The University of Minnesota Duluth was tabbed the North Division favorite.
Moro is coming off a record setting season in which he set the school all-time mark with 11 interceptions, also the top total in all of NCAA DII. He had four multiple interception games in 2012 including two games with three interceptions against conference opponents Wayne State and Mary. He was named to five All-American teams in 2012 and was named an All-NSIC First Team defensive back. Moro is a two-year Husky starter and has played in every game over the last three seasons. He has 14 career interceptions, five shy of the school record of 19. During the 2012 season, Moro recorded 49 tackles, three tackles for loss, six pass break ups, one touchdown, and one blocked kick.
Klaphake, elected as a team captain for the third straight year, is a three-time All-NSIC North Division selection, the 2012 NSIC North Offensive Preseason Player of the Year and in 2010 was the NSIC Offensive Newcomer of the Year. A three-year starter for the Huskies, the team is 24-10 in his 34 starts. He has thrown for over 2,000 yards in each of his three seasons. He is the first Husky quarterback to pass for over 7,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a career. He finished the 2012 season with 2,760 passing yards, completing 178 passes and connecting for 28 touchdowns. He rushed for 607 yards and nine touchdowns.
The 2013 Husky football season will get underway on Aug. 14 when the Huskies report to fall camp. The team will open the season on the road at Southwest Minnesota State University on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. The Huskies home opener is set for 6 p.m. on Sept. 14 against Winona State University at Husky Stadium.
