ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Junior running back Ledell White and red shirt sophomore tailback Kenneth Walker each scored touchdowns on Saturday as the Husky offense beat the Husky defense 39-22 at the spring game at Husky Stadium.
It remains to be seen how the Husky offense will roll on in a post-Philip Klaphake era in 2014, but having those two tailbacks to anchor a solid rushing attack will not be a bad place to start.
Taking the first snaps for the offense, White rushed for 34 yards on ten carries with a 1 yard touchdown rumble. Walker, scoring his TD on a 52 yard catch and run, also picked up 25 yards with his feet on 4 carries.
All four quarterbacks in the race to replace Klaphake saw time. Jameson Parsons and Nate Meyer, thought to be the front-runners, each led scoring drives. Parsons ended the day with 4-4 with 110 yards through the air. His passing yardage included a 46 yard touchdown strike to senior WR Taylor Berger. For Meyer, the ROCORI grad, he finished up with 52 yards through the air and 14 on the ground.
While Berger notched the only touchdown for the receiving core, red-shirt junior Cole Otto also showed an ability to stretch the field as a wide out with two catches for 64 yards, including a 44 yard strike.
Defensively the front four got rolling as the spring game moved along. The defense tallied five total sacks with Ben Watters, Aaron Pavek, Quinten Dismukes and Nathan Holasek all picking up solo sacks. Junior defensive back Bob Rada led the way defensively with 12 total tackles while Sophomore line backer Nathan Snider had five.
At halftime of the spring contest Head Coach Scott Underwood announced the player elected captains for the season. For a second straight year senior defensive lineman Jeff Bias will captain the defense, while White will be the offense captain. The coaches will select two more captains at the end of fall camp.
