ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) – After losing a semi-final match-up over the weekend, the St. Cloud Apollo baseball team entered the week needing three wins to claim a sectional title and a spot in the state AAA tournament. Now, after back-to-back shut-out wins Tuesday, the Eagles are just a single win away from a championship in section 8AAA.
St. Cloud Apollo will take on Bemidji, the top team in the section, Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with the winner clinching the section title and moving on to the state tournament.
The Eagles won the right for the final game, blanking Bemidji 4-0 Tuesday to stave off elimination. Earlier in the day Apollo defeated the Rocori Spartans 2-0 to move into the championship round. The pair of shut-outs marked the eighth and ninth times on the season the Apollo pitching staff has blanked an opponent this season.
With a Central Lakes Conference title under their belt, the Eagles have now won more than 20 games on the season. Apollo ended the season as the number eight team in the state with high expectations for the sectional tournament. They stumbled in a third round match-up against Rocori before getting their revenge Tuesday morning.
