St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team pulled off a 65-62 win over the Mustangs to extend their winning streak at Halenbeck Hall to seven straight.
It was a battle to the final buzzer consisting of 10 tied scores and 15 lead changes. St. Cloud State took the final lead with just under two minutes to play. With the win St. Cloud State improves to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the NSIC. Southwest Minnesota State falls to 2-11 this season and 0-9 in conference action.
The Mustangs shot 45% from the field in the first half to lead the Huskies 33-32 after the first twenty minutes of play. St. Cloud State capitalized on free throw attempts making 14 of 15 attempts in the second half and forcing Southwest into 24 total turnovers.
Down by one at the 2:36 mark, Jessica Benson and Rachael Moen each drained two free throws to go up 63-60 with 1:19 to go. Southwest's Hannah Beeler scored in the paint to give the Huskies just a one-point advantage before the Mustangs were forced to foul. Sam Price was sent to the line, knocking down both free throw attempts to give the Huskies a 65-62 edge. The Mustangs had time for one final shot attempt but were unable to connect.
Jessica Benson led all players with 18 points on the night. Benson went six for 11 from the field and five of five from behind the line. She finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
Price connected on eight of eight shots from the free throw line to finish with 14 points. Meanwhile Moen had eight points on the night, dished out four assists and grabbed a team-high five steals.
The Huskies shot 35% from the field, but were outrebounded by the Mustangs, 32-41.
