St. Cloud, Minn. (June 9, 2014) - There's a new dog in town as St. Cloud State athletics unveiled a new Huskies logo today at the annual Famous Dave's Huskies Sportacular held at the St. Cloud Country Club.
The new look of the Husky is a secondary logo and maintains a visual connection to the global/institutional "St. C" ligature. It replaces the Husky head logo that has existed since the 1999-2000 school year.
A new, stylized word mark was also developed as part of a review of all athletic team logos and marks, which had moved away from a consistent look on team uniforms.
The new uniforms will have St. Cloud State or Huskies in a custom font created specifically for the athletic department. The new uniforms will be phased in as part of the uniform replacement process.
The combination of the primary logo, secondary logo and word mark will give Huskies athletics a consistent look and feel, and will be highly recognizable across all sports.
The new secondary logo embodies the ideals of pride, fierceness and competitiveness. It is contemporary in appearance and more in line with the changes other colleges and universities have made to keep their logos fresh. It will be used as a complementary element on uniforms and will have a strong presence in the retail sector.
"The 'StC' logo has clear recognition at the regional and national level and will continue to serve as St. Cloud State Athletics' primary mark," said Heather Weems, St. Cloud State Director of Athletics. "The new front facing alternate Huskies logo and word marks provide a strong complement to our current brand and captures the tough-minded spirit of our student-athletes and coaches. We are excited to bring a consistent look to our apparel and graphics, and to continue to build pride amongst our students, alumni, and fans."
Joe Bosack & Co., a firm with a national reputation for developing strong identity solutions at about 100 colleges and universities, developed the secondary logo, word mark and sport-specific logos that will consistently and cohesively represent the entire St. Cloud State athletics program, including internal departments and men's and women's teams.
The process for creating the secondary logo and word mark began last December. Joe Bosack and David Haney of Joe Bosack & Co., came to campus to review existing uses of both the primary and secondary logos, and gathered input from groups, including student-athletes, student association leaders, campus administrators, faculty, other students, alumni, boosters, athletics staff, and local vendors.
"We are thrilled to have worked with St. Cloud State on this exciting project," commented Bosack. "With the new secondary logo, customized word marks and distinctive numbers, Huskies Athletics now has all the brand identity assets needed to reflect the excellence and aspirations of the program."
Apparel with the new designs will be unveiled throughout the summer months leading up to a celebration at the Huskies football home opener on Sept. 13. Licensed Huskies apparel will be available at the SCSU Bookstore and at various retail outlets in the St. Cloud area later this summer.

Huskies became the university's official nickname in the late 1930s. The mascot was named "Blizzard" in a contest held by the St. Cloud State athletic department in the winter of 1997.
