ST. CLOUD, MN (SCSU) - The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team will open its 2012-13 season with an exhibition game in Lansing, Mich. Against NCAA Division I opponent Michigan State University on Friday, Nov. 2.
The game is scheduled to be played at the Breslin Center (14,759 cap.) on the MSU campus and the start time is still to be determined.
The game will mark the start of the 2012-13 campaign for the Huskies, with its regular season opener on the road at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. on Nov. 16. The Huskies' 2012-13 home opener at Halenbeck Hall is slated for 4 p.m. on Dec. 1 against Minnesota Duluth.
The Huskies are coming off a strong showing in 2011-12 that feauted a 20-9 overall record and a 15-7 mark in the NSIC. SCSU also gained an NCAA Division II tournament bid in 2011-12, which is the team's eighth tournament bid since 2000. SCSU coach Kevin Schlagel will bring a 301-141 career record into the 2012-13 season. He has been head coach for the Huskies since the 1997-98 season.
SCSU's connection with Michigan State comes through sophomore guard Kevin Levandowski (Appleton, Wis.), who is the nephew of Michigan State University men's basketball coach Tom Izzo. The 2012 NABC Coach of the Year and Big 10 Coach of the Year, Izzo led the Spartans to a 29-8 record in 2011-12. His teams have gained 15 consecutive NCAA Division I tournament bids, seven Big 10 conference titles and one NCAA championship during his 16 years in Lansing.
