MINNEAPOLIS, Minn (KNSI) The Minnesota Twins announced today that All-Star catcher Joe Mauer will move permanently to first base starting with the 2014 season.

The move comes after Mauer consulted with team doctors and doctors from the Mayo Clinic. He suffered a concussion after taking a foul tip off the catcher'smask late in the season. He went on the disabled list August 20th, and missed the rest of the season.

The Twins say Mauer is now symptom-free from the concussion and is participating in off-season workouts with no restrictions.

Mauer batted .324 this past season, and won the 2013 American League Silver Slugger award for his position.

Mauer will assume the first base position from longtime fellow teammate Justin Morneau, who was traded to Pittsburgh during the season.
