MANKATO, MN (KNSI) – Let the records hit the floor, again. The St. Cloud State University Husky baseball team has extended its all-time season win total to 45 Friday afternoon with its 20th straight victory, a 3-2 decision over Minnesota State University, the top seed in the NSIC baseball tournament.
The 20 straight wins also extends an all-time best for consecutive victories as the Huskies now move within one win of an NSIC tournament title.
Two runs in the first inning put the Huskies into front-running mode against the host Mavericks. With two outs, SCSU strung together back-to-back singles from team captains Joey Benke and Brian Hansen to keep the inning alive. After a walk to load the bases, catcher Mike Jurgella started the scoring with an RBI single. Joey Althoff worked a bases loaded walk to put the Huskies up 2-0.
Junior Scott Lieser got the start for the Huskies and tossed seven innings of one run baseball at Minnesota State, who split the only two games played against the Huskies this year. Leiser allowed just six hits and struck out five.
Leading 2-1 into the fifth, the Huskies tacked on the third, and decisive, run when Minnetonka junior Sean Borman blasted a solo homer to left-center with one out. The home run is Borman's team leading 10th of the season.
With Lieser leaving after seven, Chris Kubitz came in and pitched a scoreless eighth. In the bottom of the ninth the Mavericks put together a rally. Kubitz left after he walked the first batter of the inning. New Ulm sophomore Kyle Fischer came in and recorded two outs quickly. Back-to-back singles cut the lead to 3-2, but Fischer induced a ground ball off the bat of a Mavericks pinch hitter to strand the tying and go-ahead run on base.
St. Cloud State will await the winner of the late game Friday in Mankato between Winona State and Augustana. The Huskies defeated both of those teams earlier in the tournament, so it will take just a single victory to clinch the title. The championship is scheduled for 12 p.m. Saturday from Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato.
