MANKATO, Minn. (KNSI) - With 54 points of offense and a thrilling final second stand by the defense, the St. Cloud State Husky football team defeated Minnesota State University 54-48 in NCAA DII playoff action Saturday afternoon.
Leading by 20 into the 2nd half, the Huskies answered a furious Maverick comeback attempt thanks to 517 yards of total offense on the day.
Senior quarterback Philip Klaphake had an outstanding day in both phases of the offense. He amassed 165 yards on the ground with 2 scores, while also throwing for 329 yards and 4 touchdowns. One of those scores went to wide receiver Taylor Berger who finished with a team high 149 yards receiving. Dan Brown also had two touchdowns and 114 yards through the air.
The defense stepped up in big moments with 5 total sacks on the day. Bo Putrah had a huge day with two sacks coming in the first half and multiple quarterback hurries.
With the win the Huskies move on to the Super Region 3 championship next week. 12-1 St. Cloud State will travel to meet unbeaten Northwest Missouri State. The time of the game has yet to be determined.
