MANKATO, MN (KNSI) – The St. Cloud State Huskies baseball team moves to the second round of the NSIC Tournament Thursday after a 6-4 first round win over the Augustana Vikings Wednesday afternoon.
Next up for the Huskies, a match-up with the Winona State Warriors at 7 p.m. from Mankato's Franklin Rogers Park.
The first round victory over Augustana is number 43 of the year for SCSU, tying the school record set a season ago. The win also extends the school best ever win streak to 18 in a row.
Senior starting pitcher Logan Birr tossed six solid innings with 11 strike-outs, allowing just three runs on six hits. The win moved Birr to 10-0 and gave him the school record for wins in a single season.
The second seeded Huskies went up 3-0 in the first and never looked back. At the plate junior Travis Cariveau had a pair of RBI, including a second inning home run, his fourth of the season. Kyle Fischer secured the final three outs for the Huskies, recording his second save of the season. The SCSU staff combined for 14 punch-outs as they defeated the Vikings for the sixth time this season.
SCSU went 3-1 against their second round opponent Winona State. The Warriors are the three seed in the tournament and edged out Wayne State College 2-1 yesterday. Wayne will now face elimination as they take on top seed Minnesota State who out-lasted Minnesota-Duluth 6-5 in the first round.
