TOLEDO, Ohio (KNSI) - The St. Cloud State Husky men's hockey team dominated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first round of the NCAA Ice Hockey tournament Saturday afternoon scoring a 5-1 victory and punching their ticket to the second round.
Ben Hanowski got the Huskies going with a first period goal at the 11:32 mark. Andrew Prochno and Kalle Kossila assisted. After finishing the first frame up 1-0, the Huskies scored three unanswered in the second to put a strangle-hold on the contest.
Joey Benik began the second period barrage with a power play goal at the 9:28 mark. Then at the 13:35 mark Cory Thorson made it 3-0 off a feed from Brooks Bertsch and Benik. Just 42 seconds later the game, as heard on KNSI, was all but over when Jimmy Murray hooked up with Jonny Brodzinski to find the back of the net and make it 4-0.
The WCHA regular season champ Huskies gave up their loan goal at the 7:44 mark in the third but Benik got his second goal of the day to set the final margin at 5-1. For his effort the Husky freshman earned the number one star of the game.
St. Cloud State dominated the pressure most of the game out-shooting the Irish 23-18. Goalie Ryan Faragher made 17 saves to help secure the victory. A win Sunday will put the Huskies in the Frozen Four.
The Huskies await the winner of the next game in Toledo between Minnesota State-Mankato and Miami(Ohio).
