ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) Western Michigan's Shane Berschbach scored an even strength goal at 4:39 of the third period. It proved to be the game-winner as the Broncos beat St. Cloud State 2-1 Saturday night in National Collegiate Hockey Conference action before a crowd of 4,697 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Western Michigan opened the scoring on a Will Kessel goal at the 7:10 mark of the opening period. But the Huskies tied the score on a Kalle Kossila goal at 16:58 of the opening frame. Jonny Brodzinski and Ryan Papa were credited with the assists.
The two teams played a scoreless second period before Berschbach netted the game-winner in the third.
The Huskies were 0 for 6 on the power play, including one in the final two minutes of the game.
St. Cloud State held a 33-19 advantage in shots on goal.
With the loss, the Huskies go to 12-4-4 overall, and 7-3-2 in NCHC play.
Next up for St. Cloud State is a matchup with number one ranked Minnesota. They play the Gophers at 7:00 p.m. Friday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul as part of the inaugural North Star College Cup. Also participating in the four-team tournament are Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota State, Mankato.
