ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Even with a record scoreless inning streak, Sauk Rapids-Rice graduate Jason Hoppe wasn't considered the ace of the MSU-Mankato pitching staff in the 2013 season. But what a difference a year makes.
Not only is Hoppe heading into 2014 as the best arm for the Mavericks, bigger things are now expected. On Wednesday Hoppe was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference pitcher of the year.
Hoppe's 2013 was one of the best, as he racked up an 8-1 record and an impressive 1.26 ERA (which was good for 5th in the nation) in 13 starts and 14 appearances. He led the Mavericks with 99 strikeouts in 92.2 innings of work while allowing a .203 opponents' batting average. He also piled up four shutouts and set the NCAA record of 55.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
Hoppe is a major reason that Minnesota State Mankato was picked at the top of the NSIC preseason poll. St. Cloud State checked in at #2.
Outfielder Garret Fisxher and pitcher Kyle Fischer were named as preseason players to watch for the Huskies.
