MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KNSI) – All’s well that ends well. While it wasn’t the start that Bob Karn and the Cathedral Crusaders had hoped for, it ended with a 5-4 win over Fairmont and a 8th state title for coach and school.
Senior Ace Jeff Fasching got the nod for the Crusaders and found himself in a 2-0 hole after the first inning, and they extended the lead to 4-0 after four innings. Fasching was touched up for 4 earned runs, 5 walks and 5 hits in four innings, but the bullpen picked him up.
Dominic Austing, who would have gotten the start for the Crusaders if the game had not been postponed over the weekend, came in and starting mowing batters down while the Cathedral bats came to life.
Still trailing 4-0 heading into the 6th, Sophmore Josh Thyen ripped a RBI double to cut the lead in half, which was followed by a two run triple off the bat of Senior Steven Neutzling which knotted it all up at 4-4. Fasching had his revenge as his hot shot to 3rd resulted in an error but scored Neutzling, giving the Crusaders their first lead of the game.
Austing came in, walked a tight rope, but stranded runners at 2nd and 3rd and wrapped up another state title in Class 2A for Cathedral Baseball.
