Sports for Wednesday, August 6th

 

MLB: Twins 3, Padres 1

-       Kennys (Ken-nis) Vargas had his first Major League Homerun, he was recalled from Triple A last Thursday

-       Twins and the Padres have some day baseball today at Target Field, first pitch is at 12:10pm

-       Odrisamer Despainge (2-3) vs. Kevin Correia (5-13) is the pitching match up

 

-       According to Manager Ron Gardenhire, Joe Mauer is scheduled to return to action early next week in Houston. Mauer has been out since July 2nd. Mauer is owed 23 million per year through 2018.

 

-       Ricky Nolasco went 3 and 2/3rd’s of scoreless baseball. He still has some minor league work to get in before returning to the Twins, he has been battling a sore elbow.

 

-       Tony Bosch was arrested yesterday, he is the key figure in the Biogenesis scandal. They are the company that reportedly supplied steroids to Alex Rodriguez and other major leaguers. According to reports this will lead to more names coming out being attached to steroids.

 

Northwoods League: Rox were off last night

-       Rox are at the Honkers tonight, first pitch is at 7:05pm

-       Rox have two regular season home games left, Thursday and Friday

 

NFL:

-       Bears have suspended Tight End Martellus Bennett for a conduct detrimental to the team. He had a fight on Monday and also exchanged words with WR Brandon Marshall

 

-       Vikings released their first depth chart yesterday, and Matt Cassel was listed as the starter

 

-       Vikings start their preseason Friday when they host the Oakland Raiders

 

-       Fun note from practice yesterday, Defensive End Everson Griffin jumped offsides. Head Coach Mike Zimmer stopped practice and made all 90 players do push-ups. Crowd gave it a standing ovation.

 

NBA:

-       The San Antonio Spurs have named Becky Hammon an assistant coach. Hammon plays for San Antonio's WNBA team, and she will retire at the end of the season. She will be the first full-time women's assistant coach in NBA history.

 

-       Tomorrow morning at St. Cloud Apollo the Minnesota Timberwolves caravan will be in town. Corey Brewer and Ronny Turiaf, along with some of the coaching staff, will be on hand for autographs and coaching sessions.
